His first visit took place sometime between 500/1106 and 518/1124, and his second visit was in 526/1131 when he stayed for seven years, hence he was given the honorific title of JārAllāh (Neighbor of God). Al-Zamakhsharī traveled for purposes of education and visited Mecca twice and stayed there for a period of approximately twelve years. Muʻtazilism continued to thrive in Khwārazm, at least until the second half of the eighth/fourteenth century, while in the rest of the Muslim world it had already declined.Īl-Zamakhsharī was born in 467/1075 at Zamakhshar in Khwārazm and died in 538/1144 inJurjāniyya, where he was buried.
